Chapter 15 in The Emerging European Enterprise, 1976, pp 239-263 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This chapter has two basic purposes. The first is to explain further the types of structure found in France and to describe some of the problems of operating with them. Attention will be given beyond simple organisational structure to the internal management processes of French companies. The second purpose of the chapter is to provide explanations for the structural findings previously presented. In particular, attempts will be made to explain the later adoption of the divisional form of organisation that occurred in France, in spite of the relatively high degrees of diversity, and to interpret the continued lower incidence of this form of organisation in comparison with the United States.
