Abstract: Abstract I should like to start by saying how personally glad I am to be in the Maritime Institute in Gdansk, because since I started working in the field of shipping economics in 1959 I have been in correspondence with members of the staff of this Institute. We have exchanged ideas and so it is a very great pleasure for me today to be able to come here and to meet in person people to whom I have been writing over a period of many years.
