General Introduction
John Jewkes
Chapter 1 in A Return to Free Market Economics?, 1978, pp 1-11 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract These papers cover a longish period, although some are printed here for the first time, and comprehend a wide range of economic topics. There are, however, three reasons which I think justify publication in one volume. First, there is a common theme, a central proposition, running through them. Second, they are all concerned with economic issues which are surprisingly contemporary, immediately relevant to the controversies, confusions and indecisions of our day. Third, a rereading of them raises doubts about the value in recent years of the contributions to national economic policy made by academic economists and this, in turn, poses the question of what should be their proper role in the future.
