Abstract:
Abstract Personal interest was aroused in industrial innovation during work with three international engineering organisations when the long periods required for a new machine or process to be adopted throughout an industry were of considerable concern; a further problem was why some innovations failed or were discontinued whilst others were a success. Preliminary investigation revealed that the same basic problems had been concerning research workers — much of their work was summarised in Rogers[1] and Rogers and Shoemaker[2]. However, whilst considerable work had been carried out in consumer studies, and particularly in agriculture by rural sociologists, little work had been conducted in industry with one or two very notable exceptions: Mansfield[3], [4], [5], [6], Ray[7] and Nasbeth and Ray[8] with their study of a number of technological innovations in Europe, Japan and the USA. The present research was based on industrial experience in capital equipment and was carried out in two stages: 1. Diffusion studies of technological innovations (1969 and 1973); 2. Perceived characteristics of technological innovations (1973).
