Technical Change in the Defence Industry
Mary Kaldor
Chapter 6 in Technical Innovation and British Economic Performance, 1980, pp 100-121 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The main arms-manufacturing sectors in Britain today are aircraft, shipbuilding, mechanical engineering, and electronics. Other industries, especially electrical engineering, instrument engineering and motor vehicles, are also engaged, to a lesser extent, in production for the military market. In the USA, the automobile industry plays a much more important role in the defence sector than in Britain. Table 6.1 shows the military share of output for each of these industries.
