Abstract: Abstract The ejection from office in 1726 of Spain’s Chief Minister, the Duque de Ripperdá, a Dutch adventurer who had succeeded Alberoni at the court of Philip V, marked the beginning of Patiño’s rise to real power within the kingdom. In May 1726 Patiño was promoted to the post of Secretary of the newly formed Indies Office (Despacho Universal de Indias) to which was added overall responsibility for the navy. Soon afterwards Amaza, Philip’s Treasury Minister, brought about his own dismissal by giving vent to a petulant outburst against Patiño and his brother, the Marqués de Castelar, who had recently been appointed Minister of War. Patiño was himself given the post of his defamer and consequently in the summer of 1726 he took over the control of Crown finances in addition to his other royal offices. A few years later, in 1731, while his brother was ambassador to France, Patiño also accepted temporarily the Ministry of War. From about that time too he was already taking over the Secretaryship of State from the failing Marqués de la Paz, and with Paz’s death in 1732 Patiño finally became Chief Minister of the Crown, adding foreign affairs to his already enormous burden of home ministries. He discharged his widespread and exacting responsibilities with remarkable energy until his death in 1736.1
