Chapter 2 in The Hidden Meaning of Pay Conflict, 1981, pp 13-25 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract To study attitudes to employment, it is usual to ask people series of questions, by interviewing them or by getting them to complete questionnaires. Then one has to interpret their replies. There are two basic issues to be faced in order to do this thoroughly. First, what is the nature of the replies—what are they about? And what are the relationships between the many answers to the different questions—what is their structure? By dealing with these issues at the outset, I hope to give a firm foundation to the remainder of the inquiry. That is the purpose of this chapter.
