Abstract: Abstract In this chapter we consider a number of empirical studies of the determinants of variations in expenditures between local police agencies. The vast majority of such studies have been concerned with police expenditures in the USA and this chapter will reflect that bias. Before considering these studies in some detail, a few introductory remarks are called for.
