Chapter 5 in European Direct Investment in the U.S.A. before World War I, 1982, pp 85-118 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract In this chapter the case histories of eight European companies are examined. The companies selected all made direct investments in U.S. manufacturing between 1870 and 1914 and were all prominent among the other European companies investing in the same industry. In some cases, such as Lever Brothers, they were the only foreign investors in their industry. With the exception of the Nobel companies, those selected were all among the first to buy control of, or establish new, genuine subsidiaries. As explained in the case history, the early U.S. Nobel company was autonomous and financially independent but had, in common with other Nobel companies in Europe, an important but minority shareholder in the person of Alfred Nobel himself. The Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company is discussed in the case history with Henri Nestlé because the two companies merged in 1905 and both of their histories before that are relevant to the post-merger situation. Similarly, Siemens and A.E.G. are discussed together because before their separation in 1898 they had many financial and trade links which must be considered.
