A chapter in The Political Role of International Trades Unions, 1983, pp 1-5 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract One of the most important of the international non-governmental voluntary organisations is the international trades union movement. Except for the transnational corporation there has been no international organisation which has been more active or played such an important role in international relations than the international labour movement. This has not been solely a result of the vitality of the union organisations which constitute the international trades union movements or their broad international perspectives. Rather it is because throughout the history of this movement, governments and political parties have used the international labour movement as one of the principal vehicles for their covert interactions with political parties and governments in foreign nations. The international trades union movement has been, and continues to be, a vital tool of governments in the shaping of the political destinies of foreign political parties and states and is an important part of most nations’ foreign policy system.
