Chapter Chapter Sixteen in Crisis and Progress in the Soviet Economy, 1931–1933, 1996, pp 407-439 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract In 1933 the economic situation was the worst since 1921/22, the first year of NEP. The shadow of the famine, in which millions of peasants starved to death, haunted all economic activity. Yet the improved performance in the last few months of the year proved to be the starting-point for the industrial boom of 1934–6, the greatest pre-war triumph of the Soviet economic system.
