A chapter in The Employment Consequences of Technological Change, 1983, pp 1-12 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This introduction attempts to set the scene for the rest of the book, emphasising its strengths and its weaknesses. The conference proved to be an amalgam of interests, disciplines and styles. The proceedings naturally reflect this heterogeneity. While, in some sense, this might be interpreted as a weakness by the reader seeking a comprehensive and cohesive study of the topic, it is also a strength, in so far as it reveals alternative ways of looking at a problem and very often, despite differences in approach, shows substantial common ground in the findings of the various studies. In this introductory contribution, therefore, no attempt has been made to précis the findings of each of the papers (these can be found in the conclusions and summaries to each of the papers); it tries only to draw out some of the more important topics and themes that were touched upon during the discussions that ensued at the Conference, as well as pointing to some of the topics that were perhaps given insufficient attention.
