Abstract: Abstract Some recent econometric projections have given rise to pessimistic conclusions about likely future levels of unemployment in the UK and have suggested the necessity for radical economic or social measures to avert, or make acceptable, a decline in demand for labour. The discussion below is intended to help to clarify the historical trends which underlie these prognoses, with a view to assessing the robustness of the results obtained and to contribute to the debate on whether the policy prescriptions proposed are appropriate.
