Comment on Roy A. Batchelor’s Paper
Geoffrey Maynard
A chapter in Monetarism in the United Kingdom, 1984, pp 172-175 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract I agree in a very broad sense with Batchelor’s conclusion that the steep rise in unemployment in the UK in the 1970s was due to (or can be described as) a rise in the ‘natural’ rate, and that the further rise in unemployment in Mrs Thatcher’s government period can be attributed in part to one or two unfortunate features in policy pursued. However, in my view, analysis in terms of the ‘natural’ rate obscures rather than illuminates what has been going on in the UK economy.
