The Union Side

Andrew Tylecote

Chapter 3 in The Causes of the Present Inflation, 1981, pp 51-99 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Why do workers join unions? To improve their wages and working conditions; to reduce the employer’s power, and to increase their own, over their working lives. These motives, which we can call economic and social, are not unrelated; they coexist, mingle, and reinforce one another. But it is convenient to discuss them separately. The economic motive is the simpler one, and I begin with it.
