Abstract: Abstract For the last century (many would argue ‘for longer’) the political economy of Africa has been determined primarily by European actors. As the centennial of the Congress of Berlin approaches, and African states begin fully to comprehend the potentialities and limitations afforded by political independence, it is an appropriate time to question whether there are indications that Europe’s predominant position in the political economy of its southern neighbour will significantly diminish before we enter the twenty-first century.
