Chapter 8 in Keynes: Philosophy, Economics and Politics, 1989, pp 157-182 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Having investigated the salient features of Keynes’s philosophy, our attention now shifts to the connections between this philosophy and the rest of his thought. What happens when a philosopher with articulated views on rationality, logic, probability, epistemology and ethics engages with economics, politics and social policy? How do the various streams of thought interact in the one mind — are there continuities and appropriations, ruptures and separations, or merely parallelisms without interconnection? Do we find ideas and positions in other areas whose origins can be discovered in philosophy? And in particular, since ideas about rationality are key issues in economic theory, economic policy and political discourse, do we find reflections of Keynes’s distinctive approach to theoretical and practical reason in his economic and political writings? It is in addressing such questions as these that the thesis of illuminating continuities between Keynes’s philosophy and the rest of his thought faces its tribunal.
