Chapter 8 in Women and the Economy, 1987, pp 166-189 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This chapter is in two sections. In the first some comparisons are made between Britain and the USA and other free market industrialised nations. Most developed market economies have experienced a growth in the female labour force, but there have been variations in the patterns of growth. In the second section the structure of the female labour force in a planned economy, the Soviet Union, is studied. Despite the different economic system it appears that in this centrally planned economy there are some similarities with the patterns of female employment found in capitalist economies.
