Abstract: Abstract Local authorities in Britain are increasingly having their spending controlled or directly influenced by central government. This means that the government’s expenditure plans are becoming more prescriptive as far as local councils are concerned. Treasury ministers and officials have expressed a desire for more control over the current and capital spending of individual councils. Plans for the years from 1985–86–1987–88 cover a period during which there will be considerable upheaval in local government, leading to more direct central involvement in local spending patterns.
