The Economic Crisis in Central America

Clarence Zuvekas

Chapter 9 in Foreign Investment, Debt and Economic Growth in Latin America, 1988, pp 101-122 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The focus of this paper will be the macroeconomic situation of the Central American countries, rather than US policy toward this troubled region. The large volume of US economic assistance to the region, of course, makes it impossible to ignore the role of this assistance in the over-all macroeconomic picture. However, it will not be the theme around which I will structure this paper. I will define Central America in the traditional sense, that is, the five countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.1
