Abstract: Abstract Country studies of employment mostly neglect regional aspects or deal with them only in a very global or general manner. This contribution will, therefore, try to offer some research findings to complement these studies. First, the decision-makers in East Europe look for regional labour force reserves which they either try to ‘mobilize’ themselves, or want regional institutions to do so. The second, and still more important, activity focuses not on the goal of increasing the number of gainfully employed, but on their more rational use, on a better intra- and inter-regional division of labour, i.e. on higher labour productivity.
