Chapter 2 in National Broadcasting Under Siege, 1987, pp 11-23 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This book is concerned with the present — not with the past; it does not purport to offer a comprehensive historical analysis. This chapter’s objective is more modest: to present the mere rudiments of the historical background of the broadcasting systems under study without which recent developments in them would be incomprehensible. For this purpose, a look at the historical setting of the British Broadcasting Corporation must be the first in line. For not only was it the first among the four broadcasting systems to be established, but it was also emulated by its three younger counterparts — though with varying degrees of determination and success.
