Abstract:
Abstract The aim of Chapters 5 and 6 is to reassess the nature and operation of the experiment initiated at the Shchekino chemical plant in Tula province, from its inception in 1967 until 1973. The reason for the delineation of this time period is twofold. It corresponds to the period considered by Soviet sources to represent the successful years of the experiment, both at Shchekino itself and in terms of its extension to other enterprises (Parfenov and Shvetsov, 1977a, p. 2). Furthermore, these are the years which concern the major western text on the experiment (Delamotte, 1973). The intention is to provide a reappraisal of the nature of the experiment and to provide an alternative explanation of these early, apparently successful, years.
