Chapter 2 in Rivalry in Retail Financial Services, 1988, pp 17-62 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Michael Porter’s model of the five forces of competition (see Figure 2.1) suggests that the attractiveness of an industry can be assessed by examining the intensity of competition between existing players, the reality, probability or ease of territorial invasion by new entrants, the bargaining power of both buyers and suppliers, and by analysing the extent to which it is possible for rival firms in related, competing sectors to gain market shares at the expense of established, incumbent firms.
