Abstract:
Abstract Before proceeding to the concluding chapter, it is vital to have a theoretical discussion of neo-protectionism since it lies at the very heart of Japan’s trade frictions with the outside world. A theoretical discussion of ‘orthodox’ protectionism is not warranted since the specialist reader should be well versed here, but neo-protectionism is still not well-understood, in spite of my own efforts in this area — see El-Agraa (1984) for a full discussion. Moreover, the crucial aspects of orthodox protectionism are highlighted within the discussion of aspects of neo-protectionism.
