Chapter 11 in The Theory and Measurement of International Economic Integration, 1989, pp 236-253 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This chapter is devoted to the two most recent studies in the field of international economic integration. However, this is not the only reason why they are put together in one chapter; both happen to deal with the specific question of whether or not membership of the European Community (EC) has been beneficial for the UK. The reader may wonder why the studies are confined to the UK alone. The reason is simple: the British Labour Party’s Manifesto for the 1983 General Election stated, as one of its four major objectives, its commitment to the withdrawal of the UK from the EC in the belief that membership of the EC had been an ‘unmitigated disaster’ for Britain. Moreover, by 1983, ten years had elapsed since the UK joined the EC; hence, ten observations were deemed sufficient to warrant econometric calculation.
