Interaction and Collaboration of the EC and ASEAN in the UN System and International Conferences

Kusuma Snitwongse

Chapter 16 in Western Europe and South-East Asia, 1997, pp 229-258 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Initial regular contact between the EC and ASEAN was initiated by ASEAN and was motivated by economic concern resulting from the loss of Commonwealth preference trade for Malaysia and Singapore due to British accession to the EC in 1972. Nevertheless ASEAN soon saw the need for a politico–diplomatic contact as the Joint Study Group (JSG), established in 1974 to deal with trade Cooperation, made little progress. ASEAN therefore pressed for meetings between the ambassadors of ASEAN countries in Brussels (the ASEAN Brussels Committee or ABC) and the ministers of the EC countries.
