Abstract:
Abstract The ‘Chief Office saga’ straddled the entire period of the North Thames Gas Board’s existence. The search for a Chief Office occupies a significant place in North Thames’s history not only because the existence of scattered departments produced so many problems of coordination and organisation and not only because the search itself involved so much time and effort, but also because it shows the financial and planning constraints which even a major nationalised industry, notwithstanding the urgency and justification of its case, could suffer.
