Abstract:
Abstract John Robert Stephen Revell was born on 15 April 1920 in Tunbridge Wells. He was educated at Skinners’ School, Tunbridge Wells, and the London School of Economics (LSE), where he read for a BSc (Econ.) degree. Before going up to LSE in 1947 he spent ten years in the Civil Service and Army: during this time he became an Associate of the Institute of Linguists (French and Spanish). These language skills were put to good use in some of the academic work for which he was later to acquire a wide European reputation.
