International Bank Profitability: Theory and Evidence

Phil Bourke

Chapter 9 in The Future of Financial Systems and Services, 1990, pp 143-169 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract A theme of this chapter1 is that our theoretical understanding of the functioning of banks and banking systems outside the United States is relatively undeveloped. In large measure this is because finance literature has tended to concentrate on the American bank system and to use empirical data which produce results which cannot be applied outside the American environment. For instance, in banking studies it is commonplace to use data drawn from small banks in unit branching states.
