A chapter in The Index-Number Problem and Its Solution, 1989, pp 99-101 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract After a thorough investigation in his book on The Making of Index Numbers, Irving Fisher arrived at the conclusion that the geometric mean of the Laspeyres and Paasche index numbers was the ‘ideal’ index number. It is a matter of some interest to follow the route by which Fisher reached this conclusion and to find out whether it was in every respect the best possible route.
