Abstract:
Abstract My return to Dhaka in the summer of 1988 to contribute to a UNDP-financed review of the agricultural sector in Bangladesh was bound to stimulate reflections on the changes since my first visit to the then East Pakistan over twenty-five years ago. And since one of my responsibilities in that assignment was to provide some perspectives on the role of agriculture in Bangladesh’s future development, I found myself seeking to recall what hopes, fears and expectations were prevalent then for East Pakistan’s economic future and how they compare with Bangladesh’s actual experience.1
