Abstract: Abstract My own first acquaintance with the part of the world which included what is now Bangladesh came soon after the separation of India and Pakistan. It happened that the central economic administration of India was comparatively little affected by the separation: on the other hand rather few senior economic officials opted for Pakistan. Mohammed Ah, the first Secretary General of the Government of Pakistan and later Minister of Finance and Prime Minister, found himself faced with the task of setting up a financial administration for a new country with insufficient experienced officials to do the job satisfactorily. He asked the British Treasury to lend him someone for a few weeks to help set up an economic planning department. Since I had been occupied in that sort of work and was now back in Cambridge, they asked me to go out on a Cambridge vacation.
