A chapter in Working for the Japanese: Myths and Realities, 1991, pp 200-206 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract During 1989, Japan’s largest car manufacturer made the decision to establish an extensive presence in the UK. This manifested itself in three ways: first, the acquisition of a majority holding in Toyota (g.b.) Ltd., and a nominal stake in Inchcape PLC, the international trading group which previously held 100 per cent of the Toyota franchise in the UK; second, the takeover of Toyota Industrial, to manage the import and distribution of Toyota’s forklift trucks and small lorries; and third, the setting up of a manufacturing plant to produce passenger vehicles in Burlaston in Derbyshire.
