From Abstract Theory to the Reality of Practice (with the ES in mind)

Jacques Riboud

Chapter 15 in A Stable External Currency for Europe, 1991, pp 182-201 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract In order to provide the demonstration that was set out in the previous chapter we had to descend to great depths of abstraction, and I have often had the occasion to observe that that is not a journey of exploration which appeals to many pilgrims. However, it could not be ignored or got round: in order to put the ideas that are propounded in this book on a solid base it was necessary to go beyond appearances, and not merely stay on the surface. Now that we have come back up from those depths of abstraction we are in a good position to make the transition from the abstract to the concrete, to interpret the ES and assign it to its rightful position alongside the other great currencies of the world, as a payment and reserve currency.
