Chapter 2 in Studies in International Business, 1992, pp 13-29 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This chapter reviews recent key developments in international business research. It develops from a core framework based on the internalisation and location decisions of firms to the wider concepts necessary to encompass the crucial variables suggested by a variety of analysts. Developments towards interdisciplinarity are noted. These are necessary to encompass variables such as culture and cooperation between firms which are often treated as residuals. The challenge and pitfalls of comparative research are examined as is the desire to go deeper into questions of competitiveness and development. The incorporation of new concepts must not detract from rigour. The appearance of diffuseness will be supplanted by a research framework richer and eventually more coherent than those currently available.
