Abstract: Abstract If Brent McClintock is right in his view that institutional analysts are to become more involved in the debate on the analysis of direct foreign investment and the multinational enterprise, then this is much to be welcomed (McClintock 1988). However, in undertaking such an analysis, prospective institutional analysts of the multinational enterprise should take care not to reinvent the wheel. They should also be aware of the many points of contact that exist within existing theorising for the inclusion of greater institutional analysis. As one named by McClintock as ‘a practitioner’ of the internalisation approach, I will accept that label and suggest that this approach represents the most suitable type of analysis to benefit from greater institutionalist inputs (McClintock 1988, p. 478).
