Abstract Hermann Heinrich Gossen (1810–1858), a German civil servant and businessman, in his only work published in 1854 under the title Entwickelung der Gesetze des menschlichen Verkehrs und der daraus fliessenden Regeln für menschliches Handeln1 made ample use of mathematics in his pioneering treatment of the theory of the hedonistic calculus.2
