Abstract:
Abstract The principal focus of the KDI Twentieth Anniversary Conference was to examine the role of ‘social absorption capability’ in the economic development process in a comparative perspective. Social absorption capability is defined as ‘the ability of a developing country to acquire, adapt and internalize technology and managerial know-how already developed by industrially advanced countries’. I was specifically asked to summarize possible implications of the Japanese development experience for understanding the nature of such capability.
