 The Problematic Transformation of the Banking Sector in France: The Case of Consumer CreditDanielle Salomon Chapter 6 in Regulation and Deregulation in European Financial Services, 1997, pp 133-153 from Palgrave Macmillan Abstract: Abstract The transformation of the banking sector in France is part of a worldwide movement which began in the USA and the UK during the 1980s and has progressively extended to all the developed countries. This process consists of a generalized move towards deregulation, which modifies the rules of competition in the banking sector and introduces new forms of regulation. A tension appears between, on the one hand, a search for better profitability and, on the other hand, a potential increase in risks and losses. Given that financial crises can have a politically destabilizing impact, policy-makers face a complex environment. Financial systems vary significantly between countries (see, for example, the typologies and differentiations elaborated in Zysman, 1983; Huveneers and Steinherr, 1993) and thus deregulation takes on a special character in each country. In the case of France for instance, a similar sequence has tended to be repeated from one segment of banking activity to another.
