Abstract:
Abstract During the post-World War II years, the GATT has had remarkable success in securing widespread reduction of tariff protection. The recently concluded Uruguay Round also made some progress in reaching agreement on gradually dismantling some kinds of non-tariff barriers (NTBs). But at the same time, there appears to be an increasing tendency on the part of some of the leading members of the WTO to use certain forms of contingent protection permitted by the rules of the GATT (WTO)1.
