Universal Banking in Central and Eastern Europe

Chapter Chapter 11 in The Recent Evolution of Financial Systems, 1997, pp 203-213 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The term ‘universal banking’ does not have a precise definition, therefore it is not engraved in stone. In general, universal bank implies that banking organisations go beyond traditional banking activities into others, which can be selling and buying securities, underwriting securities and in some countries holding shares of non-bank (industrial and commercial) companies. We can see the term universal bank has at least two meanings: on one hand a multiproduct firm, on the other hand, a bank which carries out not only commercial bank activities but investment bank activities and recently insurance activities as well.
