Government Role and the Efficiency of Policy Instruments

Vito Tanzi

Chapter 2 in Public Finance in a Changing World, 1998, pp 51-69 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract For the past decade, a raging debate has been going on about the role that the public sector should play in the contemporary world. The collapse of the centrally planned economies and the real, or alleged, failures of the welfare state in mixed economies have brought about an in-depth reevaluation of that role in an environment that is much more pro-market than was the case in recent decades. As this and other recent economic conferences confirm, perhaps, at no other time has so much attention been paid, by economists, political scientists and policy-makers, to what the government should do.
