Economists and the Correction of Error
Israel M. Kirzner
Chapter 9 in What do Economists Contribute?, 1999, pp 125-131 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The dust jacket on this book displays a photograph of its distinguished author, our most recent Nobel laureate in economics, standing behind an impressively ornate pulpit, grasping the lectern firmly with both hands, with a glint in his eye suggesting an imminent outpouring of fire-and-brimstone rhetoric. On more careful examination of this arresting picture, one observes that the vestments worn by the author are academic rather than ecclesiastical, leading one, in the light of the book’s title, to guess that the sermon would hold out the threat of economic, rather than spiritual, perdition. But a glance through the book quickly shows that nothing could be further from the truth. George Stigler has only one sermon to preach in this volume, and that is to denounce the fatuity and futility of economic preaching itself.
