Chapter 5 in Energise Your Enterprise, 1999, pp 83-96 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract One of the most persistent business fads over the last few years (now approaching ten o’clock on the ‘fad cycle’) has been our love affair with so-called culture, vision and mission. In The Ascendant Organisation my chapter on this topic was titled ‘Culture, vision, mission — whatever you call it’, suggesting that our working lives have become imbued with this mixed-up, vainglorious pot-pourri. And when you add in motherhood and apple pie statements, something on goals, a bit of strategy, a statement of principles and so on, the result is to confuse rather than clarify. Rarely do they inspire and never do they energise
