Abstract: Abstract This paper presents a concise outline of threshold theory and of its implications for urban and regional planning. The theory received its first formulation in 1961; since then it has become an important element in Polish town-planning practice. It has been applied also in research on the central economic region of the U.S.S.R. and by the Planning Research Unit of Edinburgh University in the preparation of the subregional plan for Grangemouth-Falkirk.
