Introduction
Sue Birley
A chapter in The Small Business Casebook, 1979, pp 1-3 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The small business is a vital part of the economic and social life of the community, and yet it is only recently that academics, businessmen and others have begun to recognise that small business is rarely large business in microcosm. The motivations of the owner—manager, the skills and resources available to him, and the pressures exerted on him by the environment are often quite different from those of the functional manager in the larger firm. The cases in this book examine these differences while at the same time giving the student an opportunity to study the critical factors in the development of the small firm.
