EMU: Prospects and Retrospect
Theo Peeters
Chapter 1 in European Monetary Union, 1982, pp 1-17 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this chapter is not to offer a detailed account of the history of European monetary integration. Excellent accounts are available such as the well-documented book by L. Tsoukalis (1977), which was a major source of information in writing the first section of this chapter. We will rather focus on a general reflection about the nature of, and the problems posed by, European Monetary Union (EMU) in the specific context of the European integration process.
