Chapter 5 in European Monetary Union, 1982, pp 95-119 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract One feature of the European Monetary System (EMS) is the introduction and the use of the European Currency Unit (ECU). As is well known, the ECU is defined as a basket of currencies in much the same way as the SDR. The objective of the introduction of the ECU was to contribute to a fully-fledged European Monetary Union. Whether or not this objective will be attained is uncertain. The question remains outside the scope of this article.
