Exchange-Rate Policy and LDCs
Graham Bird
Chapter 12 in The International Monetary System and the Less Developed Countries, 1982, pp 277-292 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Since the early 1970s the international monetary system has been characterised by the existence of flexible exchange rates — a state of affairs which has been condoned by the IMF.2 Exchange-rate flexibility has raised two questions for LDCs: first, should they lend support to a system based on flexible rates?; and, second, what should their own exchange-rate policy be, in an environment of flexible rates? Both these questions will be examined in this chapter.
